The Rising Cost of a Great Clips Haircut

I got a haircut today at Great Clips. In my area, a standard haircut costs $21 before tip, but I had a $3-off coupon so it was $18 today. I usually tip $7 because that's the middle of the three suggested tip amounts. So today I paid $25 out the door.

I tried to find Great Clips haircut pricing info from 2019 but I guess that's hard to find, so I'm just going with my memory. And I believe for several years up until 2020, the cost was around $12 or $13 for a haircut. Let's just go with $13 to give the benefit of the doubt.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the price of everything seemed to surge in a very short period of time and prices really haven't come back down to pre-pandemic levels.

I seem to remember haircut prices jumping to $15, then $17, then $19, and now to $21. So basically, in the span of about 5 years, Great Clips haircut prices have increased almost 62%.

I'm not an economist, so I don't understand all the factors that go into the cost of a haircut. All I know is I get the same haircut now that I did back then and it takes the same amount of time.

I seriously doubt Great Clips employees have seen a 62% increase in pay during the same time period. Is it just the cost of doing business has increased so much? Utilities? The cost of leasing business space? The cost of supplies and equipment?

And haircuts are not the only things that have drastically increased in price over the past five years. Yet wages haven't increased proportionally. Something is wrong.

It's interesting the things you come across online when you wake up in the middle of the night. For some reason at 2:30am today, my half-conscious-but-apparently-not-tired-enough-to-sleep brain decided to search Startpage for “boycott Twitch” and discovered there is an actual Amazon boycott starting today. I took that as a sign. I'm joining the boycott. I won't be streaming on Twitch this week.

The organization behind this boycott is The People's Union USA. They've done boycotts against Amazon and other companies before. They're politically non-partisan and are seeking to unite and organize people against “corporations, the billionaire class, and the political parasites that have been feeding off our work, our wages, and our rights for far too long.”

The stated purpose of the boycott is:

[A] strategic, peaceful act of economic resistance against one of the most powerful corporations in the world.

Amazon has become the face of unchecked greed:

Exploiting workers

Crushing small businesses

Profiting off surveillance and data

Feeding a system that no longer serves the people

It's about promoting ethical business, real community, and actual freedom in the market.

This is a cause I care about, so for the next seven days I will avoid using or spending money on the websites, apps, products, and services of the following Amazon companies, subsidiaries, and brands:

Audible
Twitch
Ring
Amazon Basics
Kindle
Amazon Music
Goodreads
IMDB

(Note: I realize a good chunk of websites and online services run on AWS, but this is a consumer boycott and for practical reasons I think it makes sense that AWS wasn't included.)

Weird Medication Names

Pharmaceutical companies being allowed to market directly to consumers has resulted in a lot of ... creativity ... in the names they come up with for medications. Most of them are pretty weird, and I wonder how they come up with them. Do they come from the minds of their marketing team? Do they have software they've created or paid for to come up with these?

Earlier this year I started keeping a list of weird medication names from TV ads alone – I have not done any kind of research on medication names other than to look up the ones I hear about to see what they are used for. Every time I see a new one I add it to the list.
