I'd Like to Own an Electric Vehicle

Sat, 17 Oct 2026 14:00:49 +0000

I'm not sure yet which one I'd get, but for several years I've thought it would be nice to own an EV.

There are several reasons.

Gasoline prices have always been a factor, especially now. But generally, thought of not being dependent on gas for transportation has long been appealing to me.

Other countries are way ahead of the United States in terms of EV adoption and they are seeing benefits such as less dependence on fossil fuels and improved air quality.

Speaking of air quality, I live in beautiful Cache Valley nestled in the Bear River Range of Northern Utah. During the winter months, if it gets bitter cold, we have air inversion layers that set in. The inversion traps cold air along with smoke, smog, car exhaust, etc. on the valley floor. During such events we have among the worst air quality in the country. I think it makes sense to have EVs in a place like this (assuming they are able to function adequately in extreme cold temperatures).

I know electricity prices are rising, too. Perhaps the actual savings in fuel is – or will eventually be – negligible. But I think it's important to send a signal to the “powers that be” that there is a demand for EVs in the US. We're tired of being manipulated by oil moguls and tired of the price of oil affecting the price of, well, everything else.

I've presently had my eye on a Hyundai IONIQ 5. I've been wary of the long-term reliability of Hyundai vehicles, but it seems they've made strides in recent years. I also have been looking at the Subaru Uncharted. Toyota and Honda are also auto brands I trust in terms of quality and long-term reliability.

I will not ever consider a Tesla vehicle. Explaining my reasons for that would be a whole other blog post in itself. But I think most people understand the reasons why someone would not want to give Elon Musk more money (even if they may not agree with those reasons).

Will I ever own a EV? I hope so. But they're expensive and in high demand. I can't pay for one in cash right now and I'd rather not have a car payment again unless it's absolutely necessary.

Aggressive Drivers

Fri, 30 Dec 2022 03:18:40 +0000

I drove over 1800 miles in the past week, and I feel like I witnessed a lot more aggressive and careless driving than usual.

Maybe it's just my perception, maybe I was just paying attention more than I have in the past, but driving from Northern Utah to Phoenix, Arizona and back I saw quite a bit of craziness on the road.

Both Arizona and Utah had their fair share of people who seemed to think they were playing Gran Turismo, but we hit rush hour along the Wasatch Front (the I-15 from Provo to Ogden) and that was the absolute worst.

For example, I wasn't going slow, by any means. I always try to go with the flow of traffic. But it didn't matter how fast I went, someone always wanted to go faster and was determined to make that point in dramatic fashion.

My car has adaptive cruise control, which means it can automatically adjust the speed to maintain distance between the car in front of me. In other words, when I have adaptive cruise control activated it won't go faster than the car in front of me. That's a good thing, because I don't want to crash.

On several occasions someone would determine that I was driving too slow, pass me, and immediately cut in front of me to teach me a lesson. Only to discover that it was the car ahead of me that was going too slow.

I recently read an article about Utah drivers being the worst in the nation. From what I saw on this most recent road trip, I can't disagree.
