Weird Medication Names
Pharmaceutical companies being allowed to market directly to consumers has resulted in a lot of ... creativity ... in the names they come up with for medications. Most of them are pretty weird, and I wonder how they come up with them. Do they come from the minds of their marketing team? Do they have software they've created or paid for to come up with these?
Earlier this year I started keeping a list of weird medication names from TV ads alone – I have not done any kind of research on medication names other than to look up the ones I hear about to see what they are used for. Every time I see a new one I add it to the list.
Here is my list so far:
Name | Use |
---|---|
Apretude | HIV prevention |
Dupixent | asthma |
Enbrel | arthritis |
Entresto | heart issues |
Entyvio | ulcerative colitis |
Fasenra | asthma |
Ingrezza | involuntary movement |
Jardiance | Type 2 diabetes |
Kerendia | kidney damage |
Kisqali | cancer |
Leqvio | high cholesterol |
Opzelura | eczema |
Otezla | psoriasis |
Ozempic | type 2 diabetes |
Rinvoq | arthritis |
Rybelsus | Type 2 diabetes |
Stelara | psoriasis, Chrohn’s disease |
Tepezza | bulging eyes |
Trelegy | asthma |
Tremfya | psoriasis |
Trintellix | antidepressant |

I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg, but it's a fun distraction.
In all seriousness, though, I sure hope these medications have helped people to enjoy a better quality of life.
